Blur faces in photos and videos

Find every face in a photo or a video with AI, check each one, cover any it missed, and hide them with pixels, a blur or a solid box. It all happens in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

How to blur faces in a photo or video

    Short answer

Drop the photo or video on the page and the faces are found and hidden at once. Check the boxes, switch off any face you want to keep, drag a box over any face it missed, then save.

    1. Open a photo or a video

Drop it on the box or choose it. Photos open up to 40 megapixels; videos in MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.

    2. Find the faces

The face finder (YuNet) downloads once, about 14 MB with its runtime, and runs on your device. A photo is looked at whole and then in enlarged tiles, so small faces in the background are found too.

    3. Check every face

Each face gets a box and a row in the list with a Blur switch. Drag on the picture to cover a face the AI missed; drag a box to move it, or its corner to resize it.

    4. Choose how, and save

Pixelate, blur or a solid box, as a rectangle or an oval, with a strength and a margin. The preview shows exactly what is saved.

Pixelate, blur or a solid box

A light blur can sometimes be undone, and a face can be recognised from a soft outline. So both Pixelate and Blur here work from coarse blocks: each block keeps only its average colour, and the detail is gone for good. Blur joins the blocks smoothly; Pixelate shows them.

    EffectLooks likeUse it for
PixelateLarge squares of colourThe default. Clearly hidden on purpose
BlurA soft smudge, made from the same blocksPhotos where squares would distract
Solid boxA dark grey shapeRecords and evidence, where nothing may show

Strength is a share of each face's size, so a face 40 pixels wide and one 800 pixels wide are hidden alike. The margin grows each box on every side, to cover hair, ears and the edge of a turned head.

    Blurring faces in a video

Every frame of the video is decoded in your browser and the face finder looks 15 times a second. The faces are linked from look to look into one track per person, and the box follows the face between looks. Before a face is first seen and after it is last seen, its box stays a little longer and a little larger, because a face the AI misses in one frame would show.

    • One row per person in the list, with a picture of the face and when it is on screen
    • Boxes you draw on a video cover that spot for the whole video
    • The sound is copied as it is, or encoded again where the new file needs it

Saving a video needs a browser that can encode video (current Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer). Play the result through before you share it: the AI can miss a face that is small, turned away or partly covered.

    Where does the file go?

It stays on your device. The face finder downloads from this site once and runs right in your browser.

    • Saved without its details: no place (GPS), no camera, no date, and no hidden thumbnail, which in a camera photo can hold an unblurred copy
    • Downloaded once, then kept in your browser for next time
    • Works offline once open

    Questions

No. The face finder is downloaded to your browser and runs there. Your file stays on your device.

Not here. A light Gaussian blur can sometimes be partly reversed, so this tool never uses one: Pixelate and Blur both keep only the average colour of large blocks, and Solid box keeps nothing. Raise the strength for small or important faces.

Drag on the picture to draw a box over it. Faces that are very small, turned away, or behind sunglasses or masks are the ones most often missed, so check the whole picture before you save.

Yes. Switch off Blur for that person in the list, or double press their box. In a video, that person's track stays sharp for the whole video.
