Image upscaler

Make a photo, a portrait or a drawing 2, 3 or 4 times larger with AI. Portrait mode rebuilds faces in fine detail. It all happens in your browser, so your picture stays on your device.

How to upscale an image

Short answer

Drop your picture on the page, pick a model (Photo, Portrait or Drawing) and 2×, 3× or 4×, then press Upscale. Compare before and after, and save.

  1. Open a picture

Drop it on the box, choose it, or paste it from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and AVIF open, up to 16 megapixels.

  2. Choose a model and a size

Photo suits most pictures. Portrait adds face restoration for people. Drawing & anime keeps lines clean. The max detail models are larger and slower. 4× turns an 800 × 600 photo into 3200 × 2400.

  3. Upscale, compare, save

The first time, the model downloads once and stays on your device. Then drag the divider to compare, look at 100%, and save as PNG, JPG or WebP.

  4. Adjust if it needs it

Auto fix brings back the contrast and colour of a faded photo. Exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows fix the light, warmth and tint a colour cast. A little grain makes a very smooth AI result look like a photo again.

Which model to use

ModelBest forFirst download
PhotoMost photos, screenshots of photos, phone pictures. Removes noise and JPG blocks. Real-ESRGAN general v34.9 MB
PortraitPeople. Photo, plus each face rebuilt with GFPGAN v1.4 (faces found with YuNet)91 MB
Photo, max detailLandscapes, products, textures: crisper detail, several times slower. Real-ESRGAN x4plus17 MB
Photo, naturalGood photos and film scans: lighter clean-up that keeps grain and skin texture. Real-ESRGAN general v3, weak denoise4.9 MB
Drawing & animeIllustrations, anime, logos, pixel-light art. Real-ESRGAN anime video v32.5 MB
Drawing, max detailDetailed illustrations and art. Real-ESRGAN x4plus anime 6B4.6 MB

The first upscale also downloads the AI runtime (14 MB, or 17 MB with WebGPU). Everything is kept on your device afterwards, so the next picture starts at once.

Upscaling portraits and faces

General upscalers sharpen edges, but they cannot invent the detail a small or blurry face lost: eyes stay smudged and skin turns waxy. Portrait mode finds every face with YuNet, aligns each one and rebuilds it with GFPGAN v1.4, a model trained on tens of thousands of faces. The face is then blended back into the upscaled picture with soft edges.

  • Works on old photos, group shots and low-resolution profile pictures
  • The Face restoration slider mixes the rebuilt face with the plain upscale, without running again
  • Up to 24 faces per picture; faces under 16 pixels wide are left as upscaled

Face restoration recreates detail, so it can change how a person looks. For records where faithfulness matters, use Photo, or turn the slider down.

Where does the picture go?

It stays on your device. The AI models download from this site once and run right in your browser, on your graphics card if it can, otherwise on your processor.

  • Downloaded once, then kept in your browser for next time
  • Saved to your Downloads folder, without any metadata

Questions

No. The AI models are downloaded to your browser and run there, on your graphics card or processor. Your picture stays on your device.

Portrait. It upscales the picture with Real-ESRGAN and rebuilds every face it finds with GFPGAN v1.4, which restores eyes, skin and hair that upscalers alone leave soft. The slider sets how strongly faces are restored. For a portrait with a lot of fine texture you want to keep, try Photo, natural.

Pictures up to 16 megapixels open, and results can be up to 64 megapixels, so a 4000 × 4000 picture can be made 2× larger. Large pictures take a while on a processor; the page shows the time left.

The first time, your browser downloads the AI runtime and the model you chose (between 17 MB for Photo and 108 MB for Portrait). They are kept on your device, so later upscales start straight away.
