How to remove the background from a photo

Short answer

Drop the photo on the page and press Remove background. Touch up the edges with the Keep and Remove brush if needed, pick a new background or none, and save a PNG with transparency at full size.

  1. Open a photo

Drop it on the box, choose it, or paste it. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF open, up to 24 megapixels.

  2. Remove the background

The first time, the AI model (ISNet, 90 MB) and its runtime download once and stay on your device. The model finds the subject in a few seconds on a graphics card, or 10 to 30 seconds on a processor.

  3. Touch it up

Paint with Keep to bring back a part the model removed, or Remove to take away a bit of background. Edge softness and How much to keep tune the whole outline at once.

  4. Save

As a see-through PNG or WebP, or as JPG on a colour or on the photo's own background, blurred. Crop it to the subject, or by hand: drag a box on the photo, free or in a shape like square, 4:5 or 16:9.

Hair, fur and soft edges

The model works on a 1024 × 1024 copy of the photo, which is too coarse for single hairs. So its outline is refined at your photo's own size with a guided filter that follows the photo's colours, and the colour of see-through edge pixels is rebuilt without the old background, so hair does not keep a halo of the wall behind it.

SettingWhat it does
Edge softnessHow gradually the edge fades. Lower gives a crisp cut, higher keeps soft hair
How much to keepMoves the whole outline in or out. Raise it when a thin part goes missing, lower it when background clings to the edge
Keep and Remove brushFixes one place. Softness sets how gently the brush fades at its rim

Where does the photo go?

It stays on your device. The AI model downloads from this site once and runs right in your browser, on your graphics card if it can, otherwise on your processor.

  • Downloaded once, then kept in your browser for next time
  • Saved without metadata like location or camera

Questions

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs there. Your photo stays on your device.

Yes. The saved picture has every pixel of your photo, up to 24 megapixels, or the box you crop to. It is never scaled down.

A clear subject in front of a background: people, pets, products, cars. Busy scenes with no main subject, or a subject the same colour as the background, need more touch-up with the brush.

The first time, your browser downloads the AI model and its runtime, about 105 MB. They are kept on your device, so the next photo starts at once.
