How to compress a video

Short answer

Drop your video on the box above, pick how small and press Compress. It is encoded again at a lower bit rate, which makes a phone video several times smaller with little visible change. To send it on Discord or by email, pick File size and the limit; then download it, or all of them as a ZIP.

  1. Drop the videos

One or several, from a computer or a phone. They are compressed one after another.

  2. Pick how small

Balanced suits most videos. File size makes each one fit under a limit. Then press Compress; Stop lets you change a setting halfway.

  3. Check and download

Pick a row to play that video before and after, with a line to drag between the two. Use the button on a row for one video, or Download all as ZIP.

Under a size limit

A video’s size is its bit rate times its length. With File size, the bits the limit allows are spread over the video’s length, after the sound and a small margin. If the first try still comes out over the limit, the video is made again with fewer bits, up to three times in all.

A long video gets few bits per second, and a large picture would look blocky with them, so its picture is made smaller until each frame has enough: a 10-minute video under 10 MB becomes 240p. A video faster than 30 frames a second is made at 30, and at 24 or 15 when even the smallest picture would look blocky; the row then shows the frame rate. When the limit can’t hold the sound and a minimum picture for that length, the video is refused before anything is encoded, with the size it would need. If three tries still come out over, you get the smallest file made, marked as over.

Which setting to pick

Balanced is the one to start with: on a phone or laptop screen it looks like the original. Smallest is for sharing a clip in a chat, where small matters more than detail. Best look keeps fine detail such as text on screen and grass. Each uses about half or less of a phone video’s bit rate, and never more than the original’s.

Largest picture at 720p and Frame rate at 30 fps save a lot on 4K or 60 fps phone videos. A screen recording or a talk without music loses little with the sound kept; turn it off to save a little more.

Where do the videos go?

Nowhere. Online compressors upload each video to their server and send it back; here your browser encodes it with its own video encoder, on your device. Finished videos are written to your browser’s private storage while the page is open, so long videos never fill its memory. Each is removed a minute after you start over or change a setting, and anything left the next time the page opens.

Questions

No. They are compressed by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to webdave or anyone else.

Pick File size and 10 MB · Discord. The bit rate is worked out from the video’s length; if the first try comes out over, it is made again a little smaller. Long videos also get a smaller picture so they still look clean.

MP4 needs an H.264 encoder in your browser. Before each video, the page checks whether your browser has one for that picture size; where it hasn’t, the video is saved as WebM, which plays in every current browser and on Discord. A long video under a size limit can become WebM too, as its sound can be made smaller there.

It was compressed well already, so it stays as it was; with Save as MP4, a MOV is copied into an MP4 unchanged. A smaller picture size, a lower frame rate or Smallest can still help.

It depends on the video’s length and picture size and on your device, and a size limit may need a second try. Several videos are compressed one after another, and the page must stay open.
