How long will a download take?

    Short answer

Divide the size by the speed, with both in bits: 100 GB is 800,000 megabits, so at 100 Mbps it takes 8,000 seconds, 2 h 13 min 20 s. Real downloads usually reach about 90% of the line speed.

    Download times at common speeds

Line speed in megabits per second (Mbps), as providers sell it. Times are at the full speed.

    Questions

Line speeds are the raw rate. Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi, the server and other traffic usually leave 80 to 95% of it, so the calculator also shows the time at 90%.

Mbps is megabits per second, the unit providers sell. MB/s is megabytes per second, the unit file managers and browsers show. A byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s.
