What is an MPG file?

In short

MPG and VOB are MPEG program streams: MPEG-1 video (Video CDs) and MPEG-2 video (DVDs), with MP2, AC-3 or LPCM sound.

What the stream holds, read from its start and end: MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 picture size, aspect, frame rate, sound tracks and DVD subtitles. Browsers can’t decode MPEG-2, so it is not played.

How to open an MPG file

  1. Add your MPG. Drop the file in the box, choose it or paste it.
  2. Look at it. What the stream holds, read from its start and end: MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 picture size, aspect, frame rate, sound tracks and DVD subtitles. Browsers can’t decode MPEG-2, so it is not played.
  3. Take it further. Open in hands it, in a new tab, to File converter or Batch.
