What is a REG file?
A .reg file is what Registry Editor exports: registry keys and their values as text, ready to be merged back into Windows.
The keys as a tree you open level by level, each with its values in a table: name, type and data. Strings, numbers (DWORD and QWORD as a number and in hex), binary, and expandable and multi-strings stored as hex are written out as text. Keys and values the file deletes are marked. Nothing is merged into any registry.
