What is a PEM file?
PEM is the text wrapping for certificates and keys: base64 between BEGIN and END lines. One .pem file can hold a certificate, its chain and a key together.
A card for each block in the file: certificates (in chain order, with whether the chain links up), requests, revocation lists, keys and public keys, each with its facts. A key in the same file says which certificate it matches. Key material is never shown unless you press Show the key.
How to open a PEM file
- Add your PEM. Drop the file in the box, choose it or paste it.
- Look at it. A card for each block in the file: certificates (in chain order, with whether the chain links up), requests, revocation lists, keys and public keys, each with its facts. A key in the same file says which certificate it matches. Key material is never shown unless you press Show the key.
- Take it further. Open in hands it, in a new tab, to File converter.
Questions
Drop it here. Each block gets a card that says what it is, so a file with a certificate, its chain and a key is easy to check.
Open in, Convert: one block becomes a .der file, several become a ZIP of .der files.
No. The viewer runs in your browser and opens the file on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
