How to compress a PDF

In short

Drop the PDF, pick Light, Balanced or Strong, or set a target size, and press Compress PDF. The result shows the size before and after; a PDF that can’t get smaller is kept as it was.

  1. Drop the PDF

Its pages show as thumbnails. A locked PDF asks for its password in the file list.

  2. Choose how much

Light takes pictures down to 220 ppi, Balanced to 150 and Strong to 100. Or turn on Target size and type the largest size you want.

  3. Compress

Press Compress PDF, check the size before and after, and download.

That depends on its pictures. Photo-heavy and scanned PDFs often shrink by half or more; a PDF of mostly text is usually small already and may not change.

Scanned pages of text are kept at 200 ppi on Balanced (300 on Light, 150 on Strong), enough for small print to stay readable.

CMYK, black-and-white (JBIG2, CCITT) and JPEG 2000 pictures are kept as they are, and fonts are not cut down yet. Text and drawings are never redrawn.

Yes. Open it with its password, and the smaller copy is locked with the same password.

No. It is compressed by your browser, on your device.
